Recycling for the Birthday Boy

It's Alan's birthday today, I won't tell you how old he is save to say that this is the last year his age will start with a five!!

In true saving money/ recycling/ wartime thinking I decided to forego buying wrapping paper and instead made my own out of four pages of his favourite magazine that I found in the recycling bin.  The ribbon came off the throws we bought for our new sofa ... and once he's opened the parcel it will be recycled yet again.

The little paper bag is also made out of the pages of a local Welsh paper, it was this which gave me the idea for my wrapping, contains a little gift bought from a local shop in Llanrwst and contains one of his three presents which are all wrapped up in the one parcel.

He's got something he needed, something he loves and something as a symbol of my love for him.

You can't ask for much more than that for your birthday can you .... oh well  maybe a cake with candles ...so I'm going to make that later.

Happy Birthday Alan

The birthday boy didn't want a cake, he requested scones.
No problem 😊

  4. Ahh this reminds me of the thing about buying presents for Children at Christmas - "Something they want, something they need, something to wear and something to read" - I love that mindful structured approach to buying gifts for people! And HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALAN! (And to Sooze's Husband too!)

  5. Happy Birthday to Alan (and Sooze's husband too). I would say that Alan was born in a very good year (mmm... wonder why I would say that? ;-) ).

Hope you both have a lovely day and enjoy the cake! xx

  6. When the children were younger I used to wrap their gifts in the comics. They loved the paper and would read the comics over and over.

    Happy birthday to Alan.

    God bless.

  7. A very happy birthday to your dear beloved hubby. Was so pleased to see he is celebrating with a scone served the proper Cornish way, and especially with Rodda's clotted cream, nothing better "me ansum"

Hope you are both having an enjoyable day.

    1. Jessie's Jam was the name given as a nice joke to the last batch of Jam that I made before Alan's Mum Jessie died in October 2011.

While she was in hospital she asked me to bake a large batch of scones for her to give out to all the nurses that were looking after her so well. So I did and also made a large batch of jam, in her Mum's jam pan which she had already given me as the only jam maker in the family.

I made it with the blackberries growing wild on our farm at the time in Oxfordshire which she had loved visiting so much, so it was full of nice memories for her and as she handed out all the buttered and jammed scones to the very appreciative nurses and staff, she could tell them all about the many memories contained in each one.

This is the last jar of that batch and although obviously it is now over six years old it tastes gorgeous. It seemed fitting to open it on Alan's birthday.

  12. Happy birthday to Alan and to me today. We went for a little jaunt to the seaside in the freezing cold but sunny weather. I am rapidly heading towards a big number with a 7 at the front of it in two years time, all being well. I am thankful to have enough to eat and heat and a little bit over for fun. We don’t do gifts on birthdays to each other but I had a nice card from DH and some flowers from DD. Alan’s treat looks scrumptious. Catriona

  13. Happy Birthday to Alan and to all the others celebrating on this same day! What a wonderful way to demonstrate that it's the thought (and thoughtfulness) that really count when it comes to gifts! Hope it was a lovely day and I am very envious of those scones!

  14. Happy Birthday Alan - I see you have made a good start to your wartime efforts with the wrapping paper. So much more interesting than the bought stuff!
